The State of Maryland may require a bond to obtain a title for a vehicle when the applicant is unable to provide a properly assigned Certificate of Title.
How to obtain a bonded title in Maryland
- Consult with your local MVA office prior to purchasing a surety bond, https://mva.maryland.gov/locations/Pages/default.aspx, to verify that a bond is needed for your situation. When contacting the MVA, obtain the value of your vehicle from them as well.
- Purchase a surety bond for 1.5 times the vehicle value. When filling out the application, enter the value of the vehicle only, the system will configure the bond amount to be 1.5 times the value that is entered.
- An inspection is required on the vehicle. The inspection must be conducted by a licensed Maryland inspection station and can be no more than 90 days prior to submitting the title application.
- Complete the application for the State of Maryland, https://mva.maryland.gov/Documents/VR-005.pdf. The application along with the bond should be taken to your local MVA office. The application should be completed in its entirety and you will submit the following documents along with it:
• Certificate of inspection
• Proof of ownership (such as a bill of sale or canceled check)
• Proof of purchase price
• Odometer disclosure statement, https://mva.maryland.gov/Documents/VR-197.pdf
• Information regarding any active lines on the vehicle
• Surety Bond
